Unlike foundation, the focus is less on covering the skin and more on evening out the complexion while allowing your natural skin to show through. Many skin tints have a natural or dewy finish, and some contain light-reflecting particles for added radiance. Some formulas also contain skincare and even protective ingredients, meaning they can also be considered hybrid makeup.

How do you apply a skin tint for a natural finish?

Always apply a skin tint to clean, hydrated skin. Place a small amount on the back of your hand and blend from the center of the face outwards using your fingers, a makeup sponge or a brush designed for liquid makeup, such as the Liquid Blending Brush. Build the coverage as desired, from a sheer effect to a more even finish.

1. Start with clean, hydrated skin: Allow your skincare to absorb briefly before applying the skin tint.

2. Use a small amount: Start by placing a small amount of skin tint on the back of your hand, so you can easily control how much product you use.

3. Blend from the center outwards: Distribute the skin tint evenly over the skin using your fingers, a makeup sponge or a makeup brush designed for liquid formulas.

4. Build the coverage: Apply another thin layer where desired for more coverage, while still allowing your natural skin to show through.

Tip: Play with different shades to build your look. For example, use a lighter shade to subtly brighten certain areas of the face, then choose a deeper shade to add warmth and dimension.

How did SOPHIA MAE’s Skin Tint come to life? Together with Lisa from Product Development, we take you behind the scenes of the development process and the choices behind the formula. From finding the right second-skin finish to using satin pearls for a soft, dewy glow and creating shades that blend effortlessly with a variety of undertones.

The search for the right second-skin finish

When developing the Skin Tint, we set out to create a weightless formula with coverage you can build as desired. Some skin tints are very sheer or can start to feel sticky and heavy throughout the day. We wanted a formula that feels light on the skin while still offering truly buildable coverage.

The finish was equally important. We felt that many skin tints lacked that fresh, natural, skin-like glow without leaving the skin looking shiny or greasy. That’s why we focused on creating a second-skin effect: a formula that feels like you’re wearing almost nothing, while still giving the skin a fresh, dewy glow.

A natural, dewy glow with soft satin pearls

When we tested the first samples, we were immediately excited. Skin Tint gave the skin a fresh, dewy glow with a natural, satin-like, almost silky finish, without looking greasy. This effect comes from the satin pearls in the formula, which beautifully even out the complexion with a soft-focus effect, creating a more modern finish than traditional color pigments.

When developing the five shades, we considered a variety of undertones. Thanks to the sheer, buildable formula, one shade can work with multiple undertones. You can also mix different shades to better match your undertone and skin tone, for example when your skin has a little more color in summer than in winter.
